Client Background
About six years back, one of the world's leading Big Four consulting firms brought Prism HRC on board to help set up a new Artificial Intelligence practice in India.
AI was still a fairly new field at the time. None of the Generative AI boom, the Large Language Models, or the AI first companies we take for granted today had really arrived yet. Businesses were just starting to put money into Machine Learning and Data Science but finding experienced AI professionals was genuinely hard.
This turned out to be one of the earliest large scale AI hiring projects Prism HRC ever took on.
The Challenge
The client's goal was to build a specialised AI consulting team, and they had a fixed timeline to do it in.
The real problem was that hardly any professionals actually held job titles with "AI" in them. Most of the talent available was working under titles like:
Data Scientist
Python Developer
Analytics Consultant
Machine Learning Engineer
Research Engineer
Computer Vision Engineer
NLP Engineer
Statistical Analyst
Keyword searches and title matching, the usual recruitment playbook which simply did not work here. A lot of professionals were already deep into AI projects without ever calling themselves AI specialists.
What the client really needed was a partner who understood where the technology was heading, not one who just skimmed resumes for the right buzzwords.
Prism HRC's Approach
We shifted the focus away from job titles and onto capabilities instead.
Our team sat down with the client's leadership to understand where they wanted this AI practice to go long term, then mapped out the technical skills that vision would actually require.
So our search went beyond the obvious AI keywords and pulled in professionals with backgrounds in:
Python
Data Science
Machine Learning
Deep Learning
Natural Language Processing (NLP)
Computer Vision
Statistics
Predictive Analytics
Big Data Technologies
Every candidate was judged on real project work, technical depth, how they solved problems and whether they had the potential to grow with a fast scaling AI consulting practice. That is a very different bar than just checking boxes on a resume.
This is exactly the approach that surfaced strong candidates who would have been passed over by anyone doing things the conventional way.
The Results
The engagement helped the client stand up its early AI consulting practice successfully. But honestly, it turned into something bigger for Prism HRC too. Getting into AI hiring that early gave our recruiters a real head start in understanding the AI talent landscape, well before AI turned into the hiring trend it is now.
We figured out where AI talent actually came from, how people moved from Data Science and Analytics into dedicated AI roles and how the different technologies underneath AI fit together.
How This Project Shaped Prism HRC
The AI industry has changed enormously over these six years. A good number of the professionals we worked with in those early days have since gone on to become AI Architects, Engineering Managers, Technical Leaders, Principal Data Scientists, AI Consultants and Practice Heads at major global organisations. Because we never stepped away from AI hiring, our relationships with both seasoned professionals and rising talent have only gotten stronger over time.
That's given Prism HRC something you simply can not build in a hurry: a specialised AI talent network backed by years of hands on domain knowledge and market understanding. So when a company comes to us for AI hiring today, we are not starting cold. We already know where the niche talent sits, how the market has shifted and how to actually get in front of the AI professionals everyone is chasing.
Key Learnings
AI recruitment was never really about scanning resumes for the phrase "Artificial Intelligence."
Some of the strongest AI professionals come from adjacent fields altogether, Data Science, Software Engineering, Analytics, Research, Mathematics, Machine Learning.
What separates specialised AI recruitment from run of the mill hiring is understanding the technology itself, how careers evolve, which skills transfer and where the industry is headed.
Our early experience in AI hiring, long before it was the norm, still shapes how we deliver quality talent for companies building out AI, Data Science, Machine Learning and Generative AI teams today.
About Prism HRC
Prism HRC has spent over 16 years partnering with organisations to hire specialised technology professionals, both across India and in global markets.
Our AI recruitment practice has grown right alongside the industry over the last six years. In that time, we have built a network of more than 5,000 AI and Data Science professionals and delivered 200+ AI and Data Science hires across consulting firms, technology companies, product organisations and global capability centres.
As AI keeps reshaping every industry it touches, our focus has not changed: helping organisations find the right talent through deep domain expertise, strong relationships and a genuine understanding of how the AI ecosystem keeps evolving.
