Hiring well here means testing depth, not listening for keywords.
The strongest approach is a scenario built around a real problem which is to give the candidate a messy, multi-cloud situation and watch how they reason through it. Not "do you know Terraform" but "here's an environment that needs to span two providers, walk me through how you'd structure it, where it breaks and what it costs." That surfaces genuine ability regardless of which certifications sit on the resume.
Beyond the technical core, cloud engineering spans a wide spread of roles worth screening for by name:
- Cloud engineers and administrators who provision and maintain infrastructure day to day
- DevOps and platform engineers who build internal tooling and CI/CD pipelines
- Site reliability engineers focused on uptime, automation, and incident response
- Cloud solutions architects who design across services and justify trade-offs

- FinOps specialists who control and optimise cloud spend
- Data and ML cloud engineers working on analytics and model deployment
